Looks like a new version is not too far off. See here for more information, although I cannot seem to find what additions and changes they have made yet.

They have released the latest version of KSP (version 0.20). For more information, check out this link. I have been reading that some people have been experiencing some nasty bugs with this version though

O dear do we have to download this update or will Steam just auto update it?

Unless you have turned off auto-updates on Steam I think you know the answer to that.
