So I finished my marathon TNG re-watch earlier in the year and started on DS9 recently. I couldn't help but realise just how much better DS9 is when compared to TNG. I used to adore TNG when I was a kid but re-watching it now it seems to have dated poorly. TNG seemed to suffer from an over-abundance of bore-fest episodes and a preachy optimism that seemed to make for some poor drama. Yes, the new HD-remake effects are wonderful, but there seemed to be far more bad episodes than good. I did for the most part enjoy re-watching them and there are some truly brilliant episodes hidden in there, but at times it was a slog.

This was magnified a hundred times when I started on DS9... you realise what they were trying to do with DS9 was taking the series in a new (far more interesting) direction and actually having believable characters, situations and real drama makes this show a hundred times better, even from episode 1. Gone are the pacifist, superior starfleet ideals and the "make love not war" crap that seemed so overdone in TNG. DS9 is just more fun, period. The characters are better, the stories are better and the episodes just seem more enjoyable.

I am curious to see how I will feel when I finally get round to Voyager after I am done with DS9... whether rose-tinted glasses will make a difference. I certainly seemed to remember TNG being much better as a kid than I do now after a complete re-watch.

So, out of curiosity, for those of you that have watched them, what are your thoughts?

DS9 is my favorite but more the second half the first couple of seasons are a little meh.

I really enjoyed Voyager when i watched originally but not as much when i watched it again a few years back some episodes are just cheese feast.

TNG i was the same loved it as a kid but now it has not aged well at all and some of the episodes are just cringe worthy and i can't watch them

Yeah, I was surprised at how different I felt about TNG this time around. As for DS9 - I seem to recall the later series had that whole Dominion war thing going on and it heated up quite well. I honestly just found the characters all better in DS9 this time around. Sisco is a much more believable character when compared to Picard. The first thing he does when meets Q is punches him in the face! Weird though, because I always preferred TNG's Picard when I was a kid. You also have Garak, Quark, Dax and plenty of other really good ones in DS9.

I agree with your cringe-worthy comment regarding TNG. A shame too, since it also had some really good episodes, but it seems a lot more hit-and-miss than I remember it being.

Hey-ho. Was just curious what you thought. I have to admit I am really looking forward to getting more into DS9 this time around. I missed a lot of the episodes when I watched first time and didn't really seem to appreciate it as much as I do now.

With any luck I will have done DS9 before the new series comes along later this year.

Blimey Meg, you been living under a rock? I didn't realise you weren't aware of the new one. Star Trek: Discovery. Set between Enterprise and TOS. Could be worth a ganders.

It's on Netflix - think there are 4 episodes out at present. Not sure on the days/times it's out though.
