Just read the following article which is interesting - has steam done anything to pick this up yet? (I'm not on steam yet so I haven't started to look!)

Will have a look at the link later but i know for sure this is practically impossible on steam as far as i know. The only way of doing it is selling ur entire account. Besides, why would you want to?

I'm more interested on what some people consider as a 'loan' to friends - ie. I'm on holiday for a few weeks, could I loan a game to a friend for them to play - bit like we used to with games on CD....

Unfortunately games rarely work like that these days... what with accounts required for many games that are then bound to you forever etc. That is just the way it is- and has been for some time. This is probably part of the reason why shops dont accept returns for pc games once it has been opened/used.
If you want some mates to try it out you can just let them get the demo.

Just thought I would throw this out there for ya Andy (taken from the
Steam Subscriber Agreement):
You may not sell or charge others for the right to use your Account, or otherwise transfer your Account, nor may you sell, charge others for the right to use, or transfer any Subscriptions other than if and as expressly permitted by this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use).
And this:
You are entitled to use the Software for your own personal use, but you are not entitled to: (i) sell, grant a security interest in or transfer reproductions of the Software to other parties in any way, nor to rent, lease or license the Software to others without the prior written consent of Valve, except to the extent expressly permitted elsewhere in this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use)...
Lastly, check out
this and
this. Both links are from the Steam forums regarding the very issues that you are concerned about.
Warning: the second link is 103 pages long!
