I had another go at this night and managed to do a little better.
Day 4 On my daytime wander I found a lake and wondered how water affects Zombies. So I decided to build a small cave right at the edge of the lake, leaving only a short swim as the only entrance. I slung up some torches and a sleeping bag, just in time for the night time frenzy. Night time came, and Zombies poured in through both my front entrance, and also smashed through the roof. I died, respawned, died, respawned and died again. Bummer. Although the plan did not work as intended, I did learn a lesson - Zombies can walk through the lake, but are slowed down significantly when doing so.
Day 5 I headed out to find materials as fast as I could (as I had spunked pretty much everything on my last failure). I chopped down some trees and gathered some stone. I headed back for the lake and began laying down a rough foundation in the middle of the lake out of wood, stone and anything else I had to hand. I slung down some torches, a campfire and sleeping bag and sat there singing camp-fire songs whilst eating a can of Tuna.
When the inevitable night time frenzy came, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this worked. Zombies had to wade all the way through the lake before they got to me, giving me plenty of time to pick them off with a pistol or shotgun. To my surprise, I actually made it though my first night without dying.
Day 6 After the success of the previous night I went on yet another scourage for resources. More wood and stone. I then began crafting some better walls on my little "island". I re-enforced some with metal sheeting and started on windows to shoot out of. I just managed to do this as day ended, and the fun began. As per the previous night, I was picking of zombies as soon as I could (they were coming from 2 different directions so this was difficult).
At one point I heard a smash, as some of my island sank into the lake. It was a zombie spitter (just like the ones from L4D). He was sitting on the shore, spewing green shit at me. It was literally dissolving all my wood. Stone seemed okay, but since I had cobbled the base together out of wood, it, er, fell to pieces. I dispatched as many zombies near me as I could and waded through the lake to get closer to the spitter and shot him in the head. Upon returning to my island, I found it in poor shape, but still salvageable. The sun rose as I picked off the last few Z's and I made it through another day!
Loving the game. It's great how the first night went okay, but they started to mix things up the second night and caught me by surprise. I only just made it through the second night alive, and was in poor shape with no supplies afterwards.
